Thinclads Prep For Nationals:
tuneup before the NAIA National January 18, 1969

Easterns track team ran a magnificent race Saturday in Bowen Field House against Cleveland State University, Hillsdale College and McMaster University (from Hamilton, Ontario).

Of the 78 placing positions, Eastern took 57 of those of which 14 were first place out of a possible 16 first places. Coach Parks was evidently very happy as he left the field house with a grin from ear to ear.

Special note should be I made that Bill Tipton, All American Hurdler, took three first places; one in the 65 yard high hurdler with a 7.9 followed very closely by Bob Lynn with an 8.0. Tipton also took first in an exciting finish in the 65 yard low hurdle finals with a 7.5. Just a hair behind was Bob Lynn who was also clocked at 7.5. Tipton just out-leaned him at the finish line. His third first place was in the mile relay.

Eastern also had an athlete who took two first places. His name is Patrick Bynoe. He placed first in the 600 yard run at 1:12.0 and first in the mile relay.

Another fantastic track star is Keith Swanston. This fleet footed runner took three first places also Saturday. He took first in the long jump with a leap of 24 feet, 1/2 inch, first in the 60 yard dash at 6.3 and first in the 300 yard dash with a trail blazing speed of 31.9.

Cliff Larkins broke the only Field House record of the day. He did it in the triple-jump with a bound of 48 feet 2 1/2 inches, surpassing the old record of 46-9 1/2, which Larkins set himself just this year.

Although there were no official team scores kept of the meet, had there been, there is no doubt that Eastern would have dominated the scoring as they did that meet. The Huron's performance was a great season opener and there is no doubt that EMU is an NAIA track power to be reckoned with.

The other NAIA track powers will have the opportunity to reckon with the Hurons this Friday and Saturday when 20 members of the Huron squad make their bid for national track honors at the NAIA National Meet in Kansas City.

Team scores: Eastern Michigan 201, McMaster 32, Cleveland State 9, Hillsdale 4.

Hurons Chosen for Cobo:
NCAA I Indoor Championships,

Dave Ellis brought home the supreme laurel for Eastern Michigan Saturday night as he broke the United States Track and Field Federation record in the 2 Mile run with a clocking of 8.45.5.

The highly invitational U.S.T.F.F. Championships were held in Milwaukee. Eastern Michigan entered four events besides the 2 Mile Run.

In the exciting 2 Mile Relay, the Hurons also had a chance to win it all. Eric Nesbitt was running a foot behind the leader when he was shoved, and twisted his ankle. Despite this misfortune, the team still finished third behind Tennessee and powerful Brigham Young.

In the One Mile Relay, Eastern also finished third, behind Texas El Paso and Drake.

Ralph Stevenson and Roger Tremblay finished one-two in the 600 yard Run, although they did not run as members of the Eastern track team.

This was the last weekend for Eastern's track men to qualify for the NCAA Championships in Detroit next Weekend. So far the Hurons are sending five men: Bill Tipton and Mike Lind in the high hurdles, Glen Dusek and Eric Nesbitt in the half-mile and Cliff Larkins in the triple jump.
