On Saturday morning at 7:30 am, some of the entrants in the Highland Park Youth Fitness Program will give a demonstration on channel 7 TV. This program is a preliminary event leading up to the Metropolitan Youth Fitness Program which will be held at Metropolitan Beach on Thursday, July 29, at 10 a.m.
Forty-five Highland Park boys and girls will travel to join participants from 40 other cities to vie for honors in chinning, the 50 yard dash, shuttle relay, running broad jump, running hop, step, and jump, stand hop, step and jump, standing broad jump and softball throw.
Clifford Larkins of Highland Park still holds the record for boys 13 and under in the running hop step and jump, with 36’ 1.25”, a record which he made in 1963. Clifford is entered in the 15 and under division this year.
Author's Note: Michigan's Youth Fitness state championship meets were competed on grass tracks and spikes were not allowed. The triple jump runway was grass with a landing pit of sand. We were required to compete in gym shoes.
